Current obstacles

Runway landing controlLanding from orbital reentry on a runway requires precision guidance and redundant control.
Crew confidenceBefore flying crews, must demonstrate multiple cargo missions with flawless execution.
Mission costReusable vehicles only save money if flying frequently. Need high flight rates.

Physics limits

Reentry heating is thermal physicsOrbital velocity (7.8 km/s) generates ~1,500°C heat regardless of vehicle shape.
Runway operations add complexitySpaceplanes need wings, landing gear, brakes, and controls. More components = more failure modes.

How it works

4 parts

Lifting Body

Wings generate lift on reentry

Wings let pilots guide descent to a specific runway instead of splashing down.

Cargo Doors

Large payload bay

Cargo hold with doors like the Space Shuttle, enabling fast loading/unloading.

Runway Landing

Land like an aircraft

Touches down on conventional runways, avoiding water recovery and enabling rapid turnaround.

Crewed Version

Seats for 3-7 crew

Crewed variant under development for astronauts and specialists to commercial stations.

About Sierra Space

The team behind Dream Chaser

Sierra Space

Dream Chaser spaceplane, LIFE habitat modules

Sierra Space, spun off from Sierra Nevada in 2021, develops Dream Chaser reusable spaceplane for cargo and crewed missions and LIFE modular habitats for orbital and deep-space use. Partners with Blue Origin on Orbital Reef.

Dream Chaser is a shuttle-shaped spaceplane landing on conventional runways.
LIFE habitat passed full-scale burst test Jan 2024, exceeding safety margins by 27%.
SSC Demo-1 free-flyer test flight scheduled for late 2026.
