Current obstacles

  • Life support and safety approvalCrews need NASA-level air, fire safety and debris shielding in a first-of-its-kind private module.

Physics limits

  • Low orbit drags stations downAt a few hundred km the thin air slowly lowers a station's orbit. It needs thrusters and fuel to stay up, and its life is set by how much it can carry.
  • Weightlessness wears down the bodyIn microgravity astronauts lose about 1 to 1.5% of bone mass per month and muscle weakens, even with exercise. Stays stay short without artificial gravity.
  • A single module has little room for sparesEverything must fit in one 45 m³ module launched at once. Without room for redundant systems and spare parts, the station's life and crew time are tightly limited.

Launch

One module, one rocket

Haven-1 launches fully outfitted on a single Falcon 9, with solar arrays that unfold in orbit.

Crew

Visited by Dragon

Crews of up to four arrive on SpaceX Dragon, which stays docked for the whole visit as their ride home.

Life

Built for a few short visits

It is designed to last about three years in orbit and host a handful of short crew visits, a stepping stone to larger stations.

Vast

Haven-1 private space station

Vast is building Haven-1, a one-room private space station launched on Falcon 9, with crews arriving on Dragon. It's a step toward bigger stations with artificial gravity. Founded and funded by Jed McCaleb.

  • Launched the Haven Demo test satellite in November 2025.
  • Haven-1 is now planned for Q1 2027, after slipping from 2025 and then May 2026.
  • Aims to be the first commercial space station in orbit.
