Current obstacles

Object recognition accuracyThe arm must identify safe items to pick up (socks, tissues) and avoid hazards (power cords, pet waste, breakables). Current demos show slow, careful movement.
Arm durability and repairabilityA five-axis arm is more complex than a wheeled vacuum; repairs may be costly and few service centers exist today.

Physics limits

Arm range and speedThe arm can only reach objects within its folded envelope and extends over a minute per item. A human hand is faster and more flexible.
Payload limit from compact form factorThe vacuum must fit through doorways and under furniture, so the arm cannot be large or heavy, limiting what it can pick up (300g max).

Dual-pass cleaning

Vacuum first, then remove obstacles

Robot vacuums the room, maps small objects (socks, toys), then returns to move them with the arm.

Arm mechanism

Foldable five-axis arm

Folds compactly inside the vacuum. Deploys upward and outward, uses LED and camera vision to find objects, grips with force sensors.

Vision and safety

Sensors prevent damage

Has camera, LED lights, weight sensors and obstacle detection. Won't grab items with obstacles above them.
