Up to eight skin electrodes in the socket record tiny electrical signals from the muscles that used to move the hand.
In training, the user tenses for each grip; the software stores that pattern and later recognises it in real time.
Motors drive the fingers and a powered thumb into the chosen grip, from a firm fist to a flat or sideways pinch.
Clinicians see the muscle signals live in an app to place electrodes, train the user and remove unwanted movements.
