Powder cost limits production volumeTitanium and nickel powders cost $50–100+ per kg, and material waste in the build chamber can reach 50%, making per-part cost high for net-shape designs.
Build speed trades off with detailFaster build rates (thick layers) reduce surface finish and dimensional accuracy. Fine features need slower speeds, so complex aerospace parts often take weeks to print.
Part size limited by powder reusePowder not fused during a build is recycled, but each cycle introduces some contamination and oxidation, limiting the number of reuse cycles before quality drops.

Fiber lasers

26 parallel infrared lasers

Each 500W fiber laser melts metal powder across a 1500×1500 mm platform in a single layer, then the platform lowers and a fresh powder layer is applied.

Powder bed

Recoating system

A recoater blade spreads a uniform powder layer between each laser pass, typically 30–100 μm thick, depending on the material and desired surface finish.

Build chamber

Inert atmosphere

The system maintains an argon or nitrogen atmosphere to prevent oxidation of reactive metals like titanium and aluminum during the 500–1000°C melting process.
