Raptor engine

SpaceX's methane-and-oxygen rocket engine, which powers both stages of Starship.

  • Turbopumps must force propellant into the combustion chamber at huge pressure; most engines burn a little fuel to drive them and dump the exhaust.
  • Raptor uses 'full-flow staged combustion': all the fuel and oxygen pass through the pump turbines and then into the chamber, wasting none.
  • That allows chamber pressures around 300–350 bar, among the highest ever flown; Raptor 3 is rated at roughly 280 tonnes of thrust.
  • The Super Heavy booster carries 33 of them, so reliability and fast reuse across dozens of engines is the central challenge.
