Primer
Operational design domain
The specific conditions a driving-automation system is designed to handle: area, road types, speeds, weather and time of day.
- Example: a city's streets below 45 mph, day and night, excluding highways and snow.
- A 'geofence' is its map boundary; the service won't operate or take rides outside it.
- The system must detect when it is leaving its domain, such as sudden fog, and reach a safe stop by itself.
- Safety records only compare fairly across similar domains: sunny suburban miles are not equal to winter city miles.
