Physics limits

Diffraction limitLaser focus is limited by wavelength, setting a minimum fuel volume and thus minimum compression energy.
Compression energy lossMost laser energy goes into compressing matter, not fusion heating, due to radiation and hydrodynamic losses.
Reaction rate at temperatureFusion probability drops at lower temperatures, so extreme density is needed even at 100 million Kelvin.

How it works

Laser targeting

192 beams compress fuel

Laser beams focus on a hydrogen pellet, compressing it to extreme density and temperature in nanoseconds.

Fusion reaction

Energy release and burn

At extreme density, nuclei fuse and release energy. That heat drives further fusion, spreading through the fuel before it expands.

Energy gain

Output exceeds input

NIF delivers 2.08 MJ and gets 8.6 MJ back, proving ignition is real and repeatable.
