Directional drilling

Reaching hot rock

A single well is drilled at an angle from the surface down to hot rock 250+ °C deep underground.

Coaxial heat exchanger

Closed-loop circulation

A pipe-in-pipe system circulates working fluid down and back up, extracting heat without contacting rock.

Thermally conductive coating

Enhanced heat transfer

A proprietary mud layer around the well casing improves heat flow from rock to fluid.

Surface power conversion

Electricity generation

Hot fluid returns to the surface where an Organic Rankine Cycle turbine generates power, then the fluid recirculates.

XGS Energy extracts geothermal heat from hot rock without consuming water using a closed-loop well system. Founded in 2008 and rebranded in 2023, XGS signed a 150 MW power purchase agreement with Meta for New Mexico data center power in June 2025.
