Current obstacles

Scaling beyond verified usersWorld ID verification via Orbs is the growth bottleneck. As of April 2026, 18M people were verified; mass adoption requires more Orbs worldwide.
Regulatory clarity on biometric dataSome jurisdictions have restricted World ID rollout. Proof-of-human infrastructure may face scrutiny from data-protection regulators.

Physics limits

Rollup settlement latencyOP Stack inherits Ethereum's finality time (12+ minutes). Users settle off-chain until Ethereum confirms, introducing a latency window.
Sequencer dependencyBefore shared sequencing, World Chain depends on a single sequencer. Hardware faults or network partitions halt the chain without multi-sequencer redundancy.

How it works

3 parts

OP Stack foundation

Optimism Superchain member

World Chain is built with OP Stack, settles to Ethereum, and interacts with other Superchain chains like Base and Mode through standardized bridges.

World ID verification

Proof-of-human priority

Verified users get free gas and transaction priority. The block builder orders by humanity score, funded by sequencer revenue.

Decentralization path

Espresso sequencing

World Chain inherits decentralization from Optimism's Superchain. Espresso shared sequencing planned for 2026 to eliminate single-sequencer risk.

About Tools for Humanity

The team behind World Chain

Tools for Humanity

World ID, Orb iris scanner, World Chain

Co-founded by Sam Altman and Alex Blania, it builds World (formerly Worldcoin). Its Orb scans irises to issue World ID, an anonymous proof you're a unique human. It also makes the World App wallet and World Chain. Encryption and ZK proofs keep your identity hidden.

About 17.8M people had been verified by an Orb by Feb 2026.
Launched in the US in April 2025 after Kenya, Spain and others paused or limited iris scanning.
Iris codes are split into encrypted shares held by different parties, so no single database holds them.
