Current obstacles

Bitcoin base-layer throughputLightning is a Layer 2, so ultimate capacity is limited by Bitcoin's ~7 tx/sec. For massive scale, Bitcoin would need further upgrades (like rollups).
Liquidity and inbound capacityReceiving payments on Lightning requires inbound liquidity in channels. Users must either open channels or use services like Loop to 'move' liquidity around.
User wallet experienceMost users find Lightning confusing (channel management, routing). Wallets must hide complexity to achieve mainstream adoption.

Physics limits

Bitcoin mainchain scalabilityBitcoin processes about 7 transactions per second on-chain. Lightning multiplies this by enabling millions of off-chain updates, but ultimate global scale still depends on base-layer capacity.
Channel topology constraintsPayment routing depends on the network's channel structure. Poor connectivity or concentrated liquidity in a few hubs can create routing failures.
