Hivemapper network & Bee dashcam

Build a map of the world's roads that updates in days rather than years, by paying ordinary drivers instead of running a fleet of mapping cars.

Most important updates

Current obstacles

Coverage depends on where drivers goBusy cities refresh often while rural and less-travelled roads stay stale, unless rewards pull drivers there.
Leaving the token modelDropping HONEY and the Hivemapper Foundation link in 2026 means rewards now come from company cash, testing whether data revenue can carry them.

Physics limits

Satellite positioning drifts in citiesGPS signals bounce off buildings and vanish in tunnels, so even dual-band receivers can be off by metres downtown; precise maps need many passes averaged together.
A camera only sees what is in viewA single forward camera misses things behind obstacles or off to the side, and rain, glare and night cut image quality, so detail varies with conditions.
Freshness costs repeated drivingRoads change constantly; keeping a map current means re-driving every street often, so cost scales with how fresh the map must be.

How it works

4 parts

Camera

A mapping camera in every car

The Bee pairs a 12.3-megapixel road camera with a stereo pair for depth and dual-band satellite positioning good to lane level, and uploads over LTE by itself.

Edge AI

Maps made on the dashboard

An onboard AI chip finds signs, lanes and road changes in the footage, so the camera sends map features as well as raw imagery.

Rewards

Drivers are paid for coverage

Bee Maps pays drivers for the roads and regions it chooses, in USDC since 2026, so it can steer cameras to where its map needs data.

Data

Sold through APIs

Map features, imagery and rare-event clips are sold to customers like Lyft, Mapbox and VW's robotaxi unit for navigation and AI training.

Bee Maps (Hivemapper)

Crowdsourced street maps, Bee dashcam

Bee Maps, the company behind the Hivemapper network, pays drivers to carry its AI dashcam and turns their footage into fresh street-level maps. It sells the map data and imagery to companies such as Lyft, Mapbox and Volkswagen's robotaxi unit.

22M unique km mapped and 754M km driven in total, covering about 37% of the world's roads (company figures, Oct 2026).
Raised $32M in Oct 2025 from Pantera Capital, LDA Capital, Borderless Capital and Ajna Capital.
Since Aug 2026 drivers are paid in USDC funded by Bee Maps; the HONEY token was dropped from the app.
