Power per transceiver1.6T transceivers consume 15-20W; datacenters with millions of ports face power budgets that may limit deployments of the fastest speeds.

Physics limits

Speed-power tradeoffEach doubling of bandwidth (800G → 1.6T → 3.2T) roughly doubles power consumption per transceiver, due to higher signaling rates and DSP workload. Power budgets in datacenters grow slower than bandwidth demand.
Optical fiber attenuationStandard single-mode fiber loses ~0.2 dB per km at telecom wavelengths. Beyond ~10 km, amplifiers or expensive low-loss fiber become necessary, limiting reach of high-speed links.
