The brief
- Deployed the first commercial autonomous haulage system (AHS) in January 2008 at Codelco's Gabriela Mistral in Chile.
- FrontRunner AHS now operates at 23 mine sites across 5 countries, moving 11.5+ billion metric tons with zero system-related injuries.
- Commissioned its 1,000th ultra-class autonomous truck in April 2026, the first OEM to reach this milestone.
Technical approach
DISPATCH fleet management
Komatsu partnered with Modular Mining (1996) to integrate DISPATCH fleet management software with haul trucks, automating dispatch, routing and load balancing.
Electric motors on ultra-class haul trucks
The 930E series uses diesel-electric hybrid or full-electric drive, reducing fuel consumption and improving torque over mechanical transmissions.
GPS, radar and LiDAR
DGPS positions the truck; radar and LiDAR detect obstacles. Real-time DISPATCH communication enables autonomous operation on haul networks.
