The brief
- In 2021 GS030 gave the first reported partial vision recovery from optogenetic therapy in a blind patient (Nature Medicine).
- NEJM published the Phase 1/2 PIONEER results on 8 October 2026: 6 of 10 gained meaningful light sensitivity.
- Cash is tight: in H1 2026 the company flagged going-concern doubt and a delay of the GS030 program.
Technical approach
A light-sensing protein from algae
A virus carries the gene for ChrimsonR, an algal light-sensitive channel, into retinal ganglion cells that survive after photoreceptors die.
One therapy for many genetic causes
Because it bypasses the dead photoreceptors instead of fixing a gene, it could treat end-stage RP whatever mutation caused it.
