The brief
- FarmDroid operates the most widely deployed field robot in Europe: 500+ FD20s working across 23 countries.
- The FD20 uses RTK GPS (8mm precision) to seed and mechanically weed over 100 crop varieties, powered by onboard solar panels.
- The company secured EUR 10.5M in funding to expand into conventional open-field farming with new spot-spraying and larger FD60 variants.
Technical approach
RTK GPS with 8mm precision
Real-time kinematic GPS gives the robot centimeter-level positioning to plant seeds at exact spacing and return to rows for mechanical weeding.
Precision placement
Modular seed discs are configured for over 100 crop varieties; the robot places seeds at consistent spacing, reducing seed waste.
Mechanical inter- and intra-row hoeing
Rotating hoes remove weeds between rows and alongside plants without herbicides, reducing chemical use by up to 100% on organic farms.
Solar and optional fuel range extender
FD20 operates on solar alone; FD60 adds a small fuel tank for supplementary power on overcast days and larger fields.
