The brief
- CFM is jointly owned by GE Aerospace and Safran Aircraft Engines with roughly $1B+ annual revenue.
- The RISE program has completed approximately 500 test campaigns across five years, with designs targeting the A320 successor due in 2030s.
- Ground and flight tests of the open-fan architecture are planned this decade, with Airbus testing on an A380 in 2029.
Technical approach
Eliminating the engine casing
The open-fan design removes the traditional ducted casing around the fan, allowing larger fans that reduce drag and improve efficiency.
Smaller, hotter core
A compact core burns fuel more efficiently by operating at higher temperatures and pressures, reducing fuel consumption.
Electric motors on shafts
Electric machines on high and low-pressure shafts extract or deliver power, enabling hybrid operation.
Compatible with SAF and hydrogen
RISE engines are designed to work with Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and hydrogen, meeting future aircraft decarbonization goals.
