WindBorne releases WeatherMesh-6, claiming lower error than ECMWF's forecasts
WindBorne launched WeatherMesh-6, which issues a new forecast every hour at about 25 km worldwide and 3 km over Europe and the continental US. The company says it beats ECMWF's physics model and its AI model on several variables, crediting data from its own balloons. The figures are WindBorne's own and await independent checks.
- Ensemble error up to 38% lower than ECMWF's IFS and 32% lower than its AIFS, July 2025 to March 2026 (company test).
- A 4.5-day temperature forecast is claimed to match the accuracy of IFS's 1-day forecast.
- About 400 balloons in flight at a time then, launched from 15 sites; long-term goal 10,000.
- CEO John Dean: an AI weather company needs a data advantage to have a business.
