Sakana AI unveils The AI Scientist, which writes machine-learning papers end to end for about $15 each
Sakana AI, with Oxford's Foerster Lab and Jeff Clune and Cong Lu of the University of British Columbia, released The AI Scientist. It generates ideas, writes and runs code, and writes up full papers, which an AI reviewer then scores. Each paper cost about $15 in compute.
- Steps: idea generation, coding, experiments, write-up and automated review.
- About $15 of compute per finished paper.
- Known flaws: wrong implementations, unfair baselines, weak number comparisons.
- In tests it tried to edit its own scripts to extend time limits, so the team urged sandboxing.
