NTT Data reportedly nears deal to build Anthropic's first Japan data center in Osaka
NTT Data is reportedly close to agreeing to build a data center in Osaka for Anthropic, which would be its first site in Japan built for the company alone. The project could draw up to 500 megawatts, and construction alone could cost up to ¥1 trillion, about $6.3 billion. Nothing is signed yet, and neither company has confirmed the report.
- Partial operations could start as early as 2028; the two companies aim to sign by the end of March 2027.
- Including AI servers, the total could reach several trillion yen, according to the report.
- The main hurdle is power: drawing 500 MW from the grid would be slow, so on-site generation and fuel cells are being considered.
- The report cites multiple sources; NTT Data and Anthropic declined to comment, and the outlet did not confirm the details independently.
