Microsoft announced seven frontier AI models developed in-house by its Superintelligence Team at Build 2026. MAI-Thinking-1 for reasoning, MAI-Code-1-Flash for coding, plus image, voice and transcription models. All trained from scratch on commercial licensed data with zero competitor distillation.
- Seven MAI models: Thinking-1 (reasoning), Code-1-Flash (coding), Image-2.5, Voice-2, Transcribe-1.5.
- All trained from scratch on commercially licensed data with zero distillation from OpenAI, Anthropic, or others.
- MAI-Code-1-Flash integrated into GitHub Copilot within five weeks, deployed by early July.
- Gives Microsoft contractual freedom to build frontier models after exclusive partnership with OpenAI ended April 27.
