Loft Orbital and Marlan Space plan to grow AI satellite fleet from 10 to 50, with Mistral models onboard
Loft Orbital and Marlan Space announced on September 9, 2026 a plan to expand their AI-equipped satellite constellation from 10 to 50 satellites under a programme described as $1 billion. Mistral will supply the onboard models that handle reasoning and natural-language tasks. The satellites are designed to analyse radar, optical and other sensor data in orbit instead of sending raw imagery to the ground first.
- The first 10 satellites are reported to be in production, with a first launch due in October; outlets name different launch providers.
- Mistral's models also power services in the satellites' application store, where customers choose which AI models to run on the shared satellites.
- BlackSky supplies high-resolution optical satellites; Orbitworks, a joint venture of Marlan Space and Loft Orbital, will build the satellites in Abu Dhabi.
- The $1bn is described inconsistently across outlets: as a programme, a contract and a planned investment.
- The claim that results arrive in seconds comes from the press release and is unverified.
