Kernel describes a compact time-domain optical tomography system for imaging the cortex
In a 2025 publication in Imaging Neuroscience, Kernel presented a whole-head time-domain diffuse optical tomography (TD-DOT) system characterised with standard protocols and compared against other state-of-the-art time-domain systems. The compact, portable design addresses key limitations of existing systems: low availability, slow sampling and sparse head coverage.
- System offers 3,500 measurement channels per Flow device enabling whole-head coverage with portable form factor; balances spatial resolution, motion robustness and real-time usability.
- TD-fNIRS considered gold standard for noninvasive optical brain imaging; Kernel system integrates miniaturized laser drivers, custom integrated circuits and specialized detectors.
- Recent studies validate Flow2-derived metrics for neuropsychiatric and neurocognitive biomarkers; TMS response prediction study achieved 87% accuracy.
