India's IndiaAI Mission picks Sarvam to build the country's first sovereign large language model
The Indian government chose Sarvam under its IndiaAI Mission to build a homegrown foundation model from scratch, backed by subsidised GPU compute. The model was to be multimodal, voice-capable and fluent in Indian languages, with data kept inside the country.
- Compute support was valued at about INR 200 crore.
- Goal: models built from scratch, not fine-tuned from foreign ones.
- Sarvam had raised $41M in December 2023, led by Lightspeed.
