IBM plans Starling, a 200-logical-qubit fault-tolerant computer, by 2029

IBMStarling fault-tolerant roadmap

IBM laid out its plan to deliver Starling, a large-scale fault-tolerant quantum computer with about 200 logical qubits capable of running 100 million gates, by 2029 at a new quantum data center in Poughkeepsie, New York. The design relies on qLDPC error-correcting codes and a modular architecture.

  • Starling: 200 logical qubits, 100M gates = 20,000x more operations than today's quantum computers.
  • qLDPC codes reduce physical qubit requirements by ~90% vs. other error-correction approaches.
  • Interim processors: Loon (2025), Kookaburra (2026), Cockatoo (2027); IBM Quantum Blue Jay follows, targeting 2,000 logical qubits.
