IBM opens Qiskit's core to Fortran, C++ and Julia, so scientific codes can build quantum circuits without Python

IBM

IBM Quantum expanded its open-source Qiskit stack with native C API bindings that reach from the Rust core of Qiskit 2.0 into Fortran, C++ and Julia. The aim is to let simulation codes in chemistry, physics and materials science build, transpile and run circuits without calling a Python interpreter.

  • qiskit-fortran uses Fortran's standard C-interop interface and passes memory pointers directly; the article names GAMESS, Quantum ESPRESSO, CP2K, VASP and BIGSTICK as target codes.
  • qiskit-cpp is a header-only C++ library linked to the shared Qiskit library; the targets it names include LAMMPS, GROMACS and GPU layers such as CUDA and Kokkos.
  • Qiskit.jl wraps the same C library and works with QiskitIBMRuntime.jl, so circuits can pass between Fortran, C++ and Julia code without data conversion.
  • The article gives no release versions, licence terms or general-availability status, and no benchmark for the claimed reduction in Python interpreter overhead.
