Hydro commits to a HalZero test facility in Porsgrunn with Norwegian state support
Hydro moved HalZero, its zero-emission smelting process, into a new development stage by investing in a test facility in Porsgrunn, Norway. The state enterprise Enova granted NOK 141 million of the roughly NOK 400 million cost. Hydro said it was on track for pilot production of zero-carbon primary aluminium by 2030, while noting the plan carries considerable risk.
- Enova grant: NOK 141 million; total investment about NOK 400 million.
- Alumina is chlorinated to aluminium chloride; the CO2 from that step is recycled in a closed loop.
- Target: pilot production of zero-carbon primary aluminium by 2030.
- Aluminium accounts for about 2% of world CO2 emissions, according to Hydro.
