Google reports Quantum Echoes, a verifiable beyond-classical algorithm on Willow

Google Quantum AIWillow and error-correction roadmap

In Nature, Google measured out-of-time-order correlators (Quantum Echoes) on the Willow chip, running the computation about 13,000 times faster than the best classical supercomputers. Unlike random-circuit sampling, the result can be verified and shows potential for molecular structure analysis and real-world applications.

  • Quantum Echoes solved magnetic dynamics simulation in two hours; the same task would take Frontier supercomputer about 3.2 years.
  • Results repeatable and verifiable; validated against nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments with UC Berkeley researchers.
  • Demonstrates a pathway toward practical utility beyond benchmark demonstrations.
