Google launches WeatherNext 3, hourly AI weather forecasts built from live satellite data
Google DeepMind released WeatherNext 3, which learns from live geostationary satellite data and station readings instead of waiting on physics-model analyses. It refreshes global forecasts every hour with a picture about five times sharper than WeatherNext 2, and now powers weather in Search, Gemini and Maps.
- Hourly updates, versus 6-hourly for WeatherNext 2.
- 5 km grid for surface temperature and moisture, 10 km other surface fields, 25 km winds aloft.
- Up to 50% more accurate rain forecasts a day or more ahead; high-resolution forecasts now reach Latin America, Africa and Asia-Pacific.
- Adds 100 m wind, cloud and solar outputs for clean-energy planning, plus cyclone tracks.
- Independent evaluator Brightband rated it the most accurate global model it tests.
