ELYSIS starts first commercial-size 450 kA inert-anode cell at Rio Tinto's Alma smelter

ELYSISELYSIS inert-anode smelting

ELYSIS started up a 450 kA inert-anode cell at the end of an existing potline at Rio Tinto's Alma smelter, the first time the technology has run at commercial size. Testing will continue to collect industrial data for commercial deployment. The process gives off oxygen instead of greenhouse gases.

  • Cell designed for 450 kA, the size of modern commercial cells
  • Installed in a working potline at Alma, Québec
  • Testing continues; no commercial date given
  • Partners cite possible gains in safety, cost and productivity
