Electra announces an $850M EL9 factory in Springfield, Ohio

ElectraEL9

Electra will build its first factory for the nine-passenger hybrid-electric EL9 Ultra Short at AirPark Ohio in Springfield: an $850 million investment expected to create 1,975 jobs. The first phase is sized for up to 400 aircraft a year and a second phase for 800. Design starts now, construction next year.

  • The EL9 uses blown lift: electric propellers blow air over the wings so it can take off and land in as little as 150 feet.
  • Electra picked Springfield from over 140 sites, citing its aerospace workforce and nearby Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.
  • Demand is mostly non-binding: over 2,200 letters of intent from 60+ customers; Bristow holds the first delivery slot with a deposit.
  • First flight of the EL9 is expected in late 2027 or early 2028, so the factory is being planned before the aircraft has flown.
