DARPA's HAWC, built by Raytheon with a Northrop Grumman scramjet, completes a free flight above Mach 5

RTX (Raytheon)HACM (Hypersonic Attack Cruise Missile)

DARPA and the US Air Force flew the Hypersonic Air-breathing Weapon Concept, a Raytheon missile with a Northrop Grumman scramjet, faster than Mach 5. After release from an aircraft, a booster brought it to speed and the scramjet lit and cruised on hydrocarbon fuel. The design became the basis for HACM.

  • All main objectives met: release, separation, boost, booster separation, engine ignition and cruise.
  • Scramjet burned hydrocarbon fuel mixed with compressed incoming air.
  • Speed above Mach 5.
