Caterpillar acquires Monarch Tractor's assets
Caterpillar acquired Monarch Tractor's technology and intellectual property after the electric tractor startup collapsed. Monarch had raised over $200 million but faced manufacturing collapse when Foxconn sold its Ohio facility to SoftBank, lawsuits from dealers over autonomy failures, and internal conflict over hardware versus software strategy.
- Foxconn's sale of the Lordstown facility in August 2025 cut off Monarch's manufacturing capacity mid-production.
- Multiple dealers sued, claiming Monarch's autonomous capabilities "were unable to operate autonomously" and the vehicles were defective.
- Co-founder Carlo Mondavi departed over disagreements with CEO priorities; Monarch later filed for assignment for benefit of creditors rather than Chapter 7 bankruptcy.
