The Beinao-1 semi-invasive brain-computer interface was implanted in its first batch of patients in March 2025. The 128-channel epidural array records neural activity from the brain surface without penetrating tissue. A 67-year-old woman with ALS later demonstrated speech decoding, speaking her first words in years.
- First implants completed in March 2025, with public announcement in April
- Semi-invasive approach avoids penetrating brain tissue, reducing surgical risk
- ALS patient successfully decoded speech, reconstructing words through neural activity
