Amazon consolidates Nova AI strategy: sunsets Premier, Omni, Reel, Canvas; focuses resources on single frontier model led by Pieter Abbeel, due re:Invent 2026

AmazonNova frontier model

Amazon has decided to consolidate its AI strategy by moving four models (Nova Premier, Omni, Reel, Canvas) to keep-the-lights-on status and redirect resources toward a single flagship frontier model. The new initiative is led by Pieter Abbeel, the AI researcher Amazon acquired via its 2024 purchase of robotics startup Covariant. The frontier model is expected to debut at AWS re:Invent in October or November 2026.

  • Four Nova models (Premier, Omni, Reel, Canvas) moved to KTLO (keep the lights on) mode; no new features or improvements planned.
  • Resources freed up reallocated to single frontier model effort, led by Pieter Abbeel.
  • New frontier model targets re:Invent 2026 for announcement (October/November).
  • Move reflects Amazon's decision to focus on one competitive flagship rather than a broad portfolio of specialized models.
