Current obstacles

Coordinating hundreds of satellitesSeamless handoff, rapid command execution and data relay require precise synchronization across the constellation.
Technical pause recoveryMid-2026 launches paused after a technical issue. Problem was resolved and launches resumed within weeks.
Counter-space threatsRussia and China have demonstrated anti-satellite weapons. System designed to operate at reduced efficiency with satellite losses.

Physics limits

Orbital mechanics and revisit timeLEO satellites complete orbits every ~90 minutes. Continuous coverage requires satellites spaced densely for seamless handoff.
Infrared detection limitsTracking layer detects hot rocket exhausts, not cold objects. Cloud cover and resolution limit detection capability.

How it works

3 parts

Transport layer

Data relay satellites

Satellites in lower orbits communicate with ground stations and each other via laser or radio, creating a mesh network.

Tracking layer

Infrared missile warning

Higher-altitude tracking satellites carry sensitive infrared sensors to detect missile launches anywhere on Earth.

Resilience

Graceful degradation

With hundreds of satellites, loss of a few has minimal effect. Full operations resume as replacement satellites launch.

About Space Development Agency

The team behind Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture (Tranche 1)

Space Development Agency

Pentagon satellite constellation, missile tracking, LEO

U.S. Department of Defense agency building satellite constellations for military communications, missile detection and data relay. PWSA deploys hundreds of small satellites in LEO for rapid refresh and resilience to attack.

SDA builds PWSA, a constellation of hundreds of small satellites for missile warning, communications and data relay.
Tranche 1 has 154 satellites from York, Lockheed and Northrop; launches resumed July 2026 after a technical pause.
Using many cheap satellites reduces cost and improves resilience: loss of one satellite has minimal impact.
