Current obstacles

Scaling capacity for mass adoptionAs iPhone adoption rises, capacity shrinks. Managing congestion during emergencies is complex.
Building signal penetrationEven with higher-power C-3 transmitters, satellite signals degrade significantly indoors. Complete indoor coverage remains difficult without repeaters.

Physics limits

Physics of satellite bandwidthEach satellite has finite bandwidth; covering large areas with many users requires sophisticated beamforming and frequency reuse, pushing engineering limits.
Latency of LEO networksAt 1,414 km, latency is roughly 10 ms one-way—much better than geosynchronous but noticeable for real-time voice. Message-based services tolerate it better.

How it works

4 parts

Satellite network

Continuous polar coverage

48 satellites orbit poles; stations and devices see multiple satellites. The network relays signals to/from Earth.

Ground infrastructure

Antenna stations and hubs

~35 ground locations worldwide. Tracking antennas lock onto satellites and receive/transmit signals.

Device integration

iPhone satellite messaging

iPhones on iOS 18+ use Globalstar when cellular/Wi-Fi fails; free emergency SOS and text (Apple subsidized).

Mesh expansion

Indoor and vehicle capability

C-3 higher power enables messaging indoors and in vehicles beyond clear outdoor lines of sight.

About Globalstar

The team behind C-3 Constellation

Globalstar

LEO satellite constellation, smartphone direct-to-device messaging

LEO satellite operator providing voice, data and messaging. Globalstar offers emergency SOS and direct-to-device messaging for iPhones via Apple partnership. Currently expanding with C-3 constellation (48 satellites, MDA/Rocket Lab).

First launched 48 satellites in 2000; completed a second-generation constellation (25 satellites) starting in 2010 for improved coverage.
Apple holds 20% equity stake and committed up to $1.5 billion in funding for C-3 constellation, which will serve iPhone satellite messaging.
C-3 will feature 48 new satellites at 1,414 km altitude with ~90 tracking antennas for robust indoor coverage.
