Current obstacles

Scaling control electronics10,000 qubits require proportionally scaled control and readout systems; keeping error rates low while scaling is the main engineering challenge.
Thermal management3D chiplet stacking in a cryogenic environment requires careful heat dissipation to maintain qubit coherence.

Physics limits

Coherence time vs gate timeSuperconducting qubits lose quantum information over milliseconds to microseconds (coherence time). Quantum gates must run orders of magnitude faster, so the number of gates you can run is limited by this trade-off.
Error correction overheadReaching useful qubit counts with low error rates requires quantum error correction, which multiplies the raw qubit requirement by 1,000 or more depending on the target error rate.
