A laser is split into thousands of tweezers that each hold one atom in vacuum. The atom's energy levels store a qubit and can stay coherent for seconds.
Pulses briefly excite neighbouring atoms into a large, strongly interacting state, which entangles them. Moving atoms lets any pair become neighbours.
Many atoms jointly encode fewer protected qubits. Repeated checks catch errors before they pile up; dense codes need far fewer atoms than surface codes.

Oratomic is a Pasadena start-up building a fault-tolerant quantum computer from laser-trapped neutral atoms. Its founders, from Caltech and Harvard, argue a useful machine needs about 10,000 atoms rather than millions. It has raised $775M since launching in March 2026.
