Current obstacles

Surgical accuracy and speedImplanting electrodes in the correct motor cortex location is invasive and time-consuming, limiting patient access.
Wireless power efficiencyTransmitting power through skin requires careful tuning to avoid heating and interference with electrodes.

Physics limits

Information theory limit on neural decodingThe brain can only encode so much information in spike timing and rate. Single-digit bits per second is near theoretical peak for population codes; faster decoding requires either more neurons or wider bandwidth.
Battery chemistry limits runtimeA chest-implanted battery must power wireless communication, signal processing and stimulation. Lithium-ion stores about 250 Wh per kg; longer runtime means heavier implants.

Flexible electrode arrays implanted in the motor cortex capture neural activity when the patient thinks about movement.

Processing

Wireless signal transmission

Signals pass wirelessly through the skin from electrodes to the implanted battery pack, avoiding infection-prone percutaneous ports.

Decoding

Real-time neural decoding

XessOS algorithms decode intention from neural patterns at 5.2 bits per second, enough for dozens of commands per minute.

Control

Control of external devices

Decoded commands drive cursor movement, wheelchair navigation, robotic arms and other assistive devices via wireless connectivity.
