Regulatory approval for therapeutic useCurrently research-only; FDA pathway to medical device status requires clinical trials, safety protocols and efficacy data.
User adaptation timeEEG decoding improves with user training; reducing this ramp-up time increases usability for individuals with progressive disease.
Physics limits
EEG signal noise and contaminationEEG is contaminated by muscle activity, eye movement and electrical noise. Improving SNR requires better filtering and decoding.
Spatial resolution of non-invasive recordingEEG cannot pinpoint activity to a specific brain region with high precision; skull conductivity and electrode placement blur the source. Invasive recording has higher resolution but higher risk.
How it works
3 parts
Signal Capture
EEG sensors on the headset
Electrodes on the occipital region detect visual-evoked potentials and other brain signals at research-grade quality over Wi-Fi.
Decoding
ssVEP neural decoder
Built-in classifier interprets the steady-state visually evoked potential pattern, translating which visual target the brain attends to into control commands.
Output
AR interface and AI assistance
Commands are displayed in AR and passed to downstream AI, allowing communication through text selection, eye control, and other adaptive interfaces.
Cognixion develops non-invasive brain-computer interfaces for communication and control. Its Axon-R platform combines EEG, augmented reality and AI for individuals with disabilities including ALS, currently in clinical research trials.
Cognixion raised $32.2M over 11 funding rounds, with latest $4M convertible note in February 2026.
The Axon-R headset is for research use only and not yet FDA or Health Canada approved; clinical trials with ALS patients are recruiting.
Axon-R offers 16-channel EEG with ssVEP classifier and real-time brain-computer interface with AR overlay.
