Heat energy is applied only where the part should be solid, fusing powder particles. Unfused powder remains loose.
Unused powder is not melted, so it can be cleaned and recycled for the next part, reducing material waste.
Parts need no printed supports; the surrounding powder holds overhangs during printing.

Stratasys makes FDM extrusion 3D printers for production and prototyping, SAF powder-bed systems and resin DLP printers. In May 2026 it agreed to buy Markforged from Nano Dimension for $42.5M, adding continuous-fiber composite printing; closing is expected in H2 2026.
