Targeted spraying
Crop sprayers that use cameras and machine vision to detect weeds and spray only the individual plants that need it.
- Conventional booms spray herbicide evenly across the whole field, whether weeds are there or not.
- Cameras along the boom scan the ground and trigger individual nozzles within milliseconds as weeds pass below, at normal driving speed.
- John Deere reported its See & Spray system cut herbicide use by about 59% on average in 2024.
- Spotting green weeds among similar-looking green crops is much harder than on bare soil, and accuracy drops with dust and poor light.
