Generative design
Software that automatically generates part shapes to meet goals and limits such as load, stiffness, weight and how it will be made.
- The engineer specifies loads, mounting points, no-go zones and material; the software explores shapes instead of the engineer drawing one.
- It iteratively removes material that carries little stress, often producing organic, bone-like forms.
- Combined with 3D printing, parts can be substantially lighter for the same stiffness; savings of 30–50% are commonly reported.
- Results must still be checked for fatigue, manufacturability and cost, and an engineer remains responsible for the final part.
