The brief
- First company FDA-cleared to trial a permanent brain implant (2021); its US study met its safety goal in six patients (2024).
- Raised $200M in Nov 2025 for a main trial, launch prep and a next-generation device with more channels.
- Works with Apple's brain-interface standard since 2025, for direct control of iPhone and iPad.
Technical approach
In through a vein
A doctor threads a thin tube from the neck vein to a large vein on top of the brain, next to the movement area, much like fitting a heart stent.
Stent-mounted electrodes
A self-opening metal mesh carries 16 electrodes that press on the vein wall and pick up brain activity through it.
Unit in the chest
A wire runs through the vein to a unit under the collarbone, which powers the device and sends data out wirelessly.
Clicks, not fine control
Attempted movements, like tapping a foot, create signals turned into clicks and selections rather than smooth, fine control.
Synchron, one program

Open technical problems
- Low bandwidthActive research
Recording through a vein wall with 16 electrodes gives far less information than electrodes in the brain, so it's slower.
- Only where veins areOpen
It can only sit where big veins run, which limits which brain areas it can reach.
