The brief
- Over 100 patient procedures at 18 hospitals, mostly short placements during brain surgery.
- Raised $250M on 24 Sep 2026, co-led by Pershing Square and the Ackman Oxman Institute; $430M raised in total.
- Recorded from 4,096 electrodes on a human brain at once in 2024, a record then.
Technical approach
On the surface, not inside
Layer 7 records from the brain's surface with dense tiny electrodes: no needle damage, and far more detail than standard hospital grids (ECoG).
In through a tiny slit
The film slides onto the brain through a slit under 1 mm wide in the skull, with no big opening, and can be removed.
Tiles to cover more brain
Several 1,024-electrode pieces can sit side by side to cover bigger areas like movement and speech.
Makes its own films
The electrodes are made like computer chips at the company's own plant in Texas.

Showed Layer 7 pieces can scale to thousands of channels during surgery.
Open technical problems
- Signal from the surfaceActive research
Surface signals mostly show groups of cells, so reading fine intent needs very dense arrays and clever AI.
- From 30 days to permanentActive research
Going from 30-day use to a permanent, wireless implant needs new hardware and safety data.
