Current obstacles

Copyright liabilityMultiple lawsuits allege Midjourney trained on copyrighted images without permission; outcomes will shape the industry.
Fine-grained controlGetting precisely the composition, pose, or lighting desired often requires multiple attempts and prompt refinement.

Physics limits

Training data dependencyGenerative image models are limited by their training data; new styles or subjects not well represented in training are harder to generate.
Semantic understandingWhile V8 is much smarter than earlier versions, it still struggles with complex spatial relationships, text accuracy, and understanding of uncommon concepts.

How it works

3 parts

Prompts

Text-to-image diffusion

Users write detailed text prompts describing the image they want. V8 interprets these prompts with improved coherence and accuracy compared to V7.

Generation

Diffusion process

The model starts with noise and iteratively refines it based on the prompt, gradually building the final image over milliseconds.

Video

Image-to-video animation

Still images can be animated into 5–20 second videos using Midjourney's motion model, with automatic or user-directed motion.
