Current obstacles

Needs soil-residual herbicides tooIn K-State-led trials, spot-spray-only plots were the weediest; results matched broadcast only with a residual base.
Sensitivity trade-offThe most sensitive setting catches nearly all weeds but also sprays more crop plants, eating into savings.

Physics limits

Weeds among crop look like cropTelling a young weed from a crop seedling of similar colour and shape at sprayer speed is hard; the system must lean toward spraying to avoid misses.
Savings depend on how weedy the field isSpot spraying saves most where weeds are sparse. In a dense weed patch nearly every nozzle fires, so savings shrink toward zero.

How it works

See

Cameras ahead of the nozzles

Cameras along the boom scan the ground just ahead of the spray; LED lights let it work at night.

Decide

AI finds weeds in milliseconds

Software separates weeds from soil and from crop. Farmers pick a sensitivity: Efficacy, Balanced or Savings.

Spray

Only the nozzle over the weed

Each nozzle switches on just where a weed is detected, so bare or clean ground gets nothing.

Record

Weed maps and documentation

Every pass produces weed maps, weed-size classes and as-applied records in BASF's xarvio app.

ONE SMART SPRAY

Camera spot-spraying for big sprayers, Bosch–BASF JV

Bosch and BASF joint venture, founded in 2021 as Bosch BASF Smart Farming, that sells a camera-and-AI system built into crop sprayers so herbicide goes only on weeds.

Built into Fendt Rogator (AGCO), Case IH and New Holland (CNH) and Stara sprayers.
Spots weeds on bare soil and among crops, day or night, with LED lights.
2025 university trials: herbicide costs cut, control similar to broadcast when paired with residuals.
