OutRun by AGCO / PTx Trimble: status and timeline

OutRun

Retrofit kit enabling autonomous grain carts and field operations. Radio-controlled grain cart allows one operator to manage multiple machines. Tillage autonomy enables driverless field work.

DeployStage 4 of 5

Autonomous grain carts launched 2025. Fendt and tillage support added 2026.

Current obstacles

Radio interference on crowded farmsMultiple machines and systems operating on nearby frequencies can degrade the 1-mile control link.
Model-specific engineeringEach new tractor model requires redesign and validation of the retrofit, slowing expansion.

Physics limits

Radio range limits operation areaA 1-mile link works on many fields but not if the combine and cart drift further apart, limiting autonomy distance.
GPS accuracy degrades in canopyUnder tall crops or trees, GPS signals scatter and multipath errors grow, making fine positioning harder.
Retrofit complexity grows with each modelDifferent tractor architectures mean each new model requires months of engineering and validation.

How it works

3 parts

Install

1.5-day retrofit

Navigation sensors mount on cabin roof; installation takes 1.5 days for two technicians.

Grain cart control

One operator, two machines

The combine operator uses a radio link to stage the grain cart for unloading or send it to a predefined truck zone.

Autonomy

Driverless navigation

Sensors and GPS guide the cart or tractor to the destination without a driver, then return for the next load.

About AGCO / PTx Trimble

The team behind OutRun

AGCO / PTx Trimble

Precision agriculture, autonomy kits, grain carts

AGCO manufactures tractors and farm equipment under brands including Massey Ferguson and Fendt. Its joint venture PTx Trimble with Trimble develops retrofit autonomy kits for combines and grain carts.

AGCO owns Massey Ferguson, Fendt, Valtra and Challenger farm equipment brands.
PTx Trimble (85% AGCO, 15% Trimble) launched OutRun, the first commercially available autonomous retrofit grain cart, in 2025.
OutRun works on John Deere 8R/8000R tractors; Fendt models added in 2026.
