Current obstacles

  • Grid capacity for megawatt chargingMegawatt chargers need heavy grid connections or on-site batteries, which makes stations costly.

Physics limits

  • Heat grows with current squaredResistive heat is current squared times resistance: doubling charging current quadruples heat in cells and cables. Megawatt charging needs liquid-cooled cables and very low-resistance cells.
  • Lithium plating caps charge speedCharged too fast, especially cold or nearly full, lithium deposits as metal on the anode instead of entering it. That ages cells and can cause shorts, so charge rates taper.
  • LFP stores less per kilogramLFP cells hold roughly 160–200 Wh/kg versus about 250–300 for nickel-rich cells, so long range needs a heavier pack.

1,000 volts

Higher voltage, less current

Power is voltage times current. At 1,000 V, 1 MW needs 1,000 A; at 400 V it would need 2,500 A, far beyond practical cables.

Battery

Fast-charging Blade cells

Long, flat LFP 'Blade' cells with low internal resistance take charge at up to 10C, a full charge in about six minutes, without overheating.

Chargers

Megawatt stations

BYD's own 1,000 kW chargers, some with on-site batteries to cushion the grid, add about 400 km of range in five minutes.

About BYD

The team behind Super e-Platform

BYD

EVs, plug-in hybrids, Blade Battery, chips

Shenzhen-based BYD is the world's biggest maker of electric and plug-in hybrid cars and makes its own batteries, power electronics and chips. It sold about 4.6 million vehicles in 2025, passing Tesla in pure EV sales.

  • Makes almost everything itself, from LFP battery cells to chips.
  • Super e-Platform (2025) supports charging at up to 1,000 kW.
  • Expanding abroad with plants in Hungary, Turkey, Brazil and Thailand.
